Lithium Ion Battery Emergency Response Train-the-Trainer
Hosted by Environmental Response Training Program (ERTP)
ERT-OSRTI

THIS COURSE IS FOR US EPA LITHIUM ION BATTERY TASK FORCE MEMBERS ONLY.

This 3-day course is designed to meet the broad training requirement in 40 CFR 300.120(h)(1) and help meet the objectives for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lithium Ion Battery Task Force to “build depth of response proficiency and knowledge throughout the On-Scene Coordinator (OSC)response community”. Throughout the 3-day course, there will be multiple train-the-trainer courses offered to enhance our national outreach capabilities, live demonstrations of response tactics to build depth throughout the OSC response community, and review of the draft guidance documents intended for both the OSC response community and the broader federal, state and local response community.

The course will generate materials and other information to share with Local Emergency Planning Committees (LEPCs) and aid in meeting the training requirements outlined in EPCRA Sections 301-303.

At the end of the course, participants should have a basic understanding of the following:

  1. Basics of lithium ion battery construction and hazards,
  2. Health risks associated with emissions during a lithium ion battery fire,
  3. Appropriate operational considerations to ensure safety of responders and the surrounding community,
  4. Standard procedures and work practices to protect workers and the public, including personal protective equipment and air monitoring instrumentation,
  5. Appropriate shipping and disposal options based on varying site conditions,
  6. EPA’s role in outreach related to lithium ion battery fires, and
  7. EPA’s on-going research projects related to lithium ion batteries.

Instructional methods will include a combination of lectures, case studies, and group discussions. The course will also include a practical, hands-on training component.
