Both organic and elemental mercury create a wide spectrum of ecological concerns. Statewide advisories for mercury in fish exist in dozens of states across the United States. This series of courses addresses concerns mercury cause by providing participants with a foundation in the science of environmental mercury and presents solutions for mitigating the impacts of this ubiquitous contaminant.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

Identify sources of mercury that can adversely affect ecosystems.
Understand how elemental and organic mercury impact the environment and different organisms.
Assess critical pathways for reducing mercury release into the environment.
Understand mercury transport and fate and the global mercury cycle.
Understand basic cleanup and remediation of mercury.
