Quest for Consensus
Hosted by U.S. EPA
Conflict Prevention and Resolution Center

This 2.5 hour workshop provides an orientation to the tools available to staff involved in Superfund and other programs to help avoid conflict and resolve disputes.
This workshop is an introductory and refresher level presentation that will provide you with an overview of the principles of interest based negotiation, how to determine the best design for negotiation or engaging stakeholders in decision making and when you might want to involve a facilitator in your project. As a participant, you will also practice several skills such as active listening and reframing that can help you function better in negotiations. The presenters will also
introduce several internet based tools for obtaining more information on facilitation of negotiations and public involvement.

Workshop principles are based upon the book Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher and William Ury. This book will be provided in addition to workshop materials.

Presentation of the workshop is free. Under certain circumstances a Region may be asked to pay for presenter’s travel. This workshop will be co-presented in many cases with the EPA Regional ADR Specialist for that region.

Presenters: Deborah Dalton, Senior Conflict Resolution Specialist, EPA Conflict Prevention and Resolution Center, Washington, DC, 202-564-2913 For general information contact Deborah Dalton by telephone at 202-564-2913 or via e-mail at dalton.deborah@epa.gov
