This training discusses the issues surrounding the assessment of remediation performance at an environmental site, and is based on the ITRC document titled "Strategies for Monitoring the Performance of DNAPL Source Zone Remedies." Although the focus is on DNAPL source zone remediation, the basic concepts can be utilized at other environmental sites. The concept of performance is discussed using a simplified equation of state, and key terms are defined. Examples of different performance metrics are discussed, as is the use of statistics and other techniques for managing uncertainty. Specific technical items of concern for DNAPLs are discussed to provide a background for understanding the challenges in assessing performance at DNAPL source zone sites. Discussion items include source mass reduction and the concept of mass flux. Specific issues dealing with monitoring the performance of various DNAPL source zone remediation technologies are discussed.
