Event Name: Superfund Essentials

Event Description:

Superfund Essentials introduces key components of the Superfund program. The course (1) describes the purpose of, legal framework, and implementation of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) and the National Oil and Hazardous Substances Pollution Contingency Plan (NCP); (2) outlines the removal and remedial processes and corresponding roles of On-Scene Coordinators (OSCs) and Remedial Project Managers (RPMs); (3) highlights the community involvement program and its role in Superfund cleanup activities; and (4) provides an overview of site assessment and other Superfund program topics. 

Course Objectives:

  • Understand the provisions and requirements of CERCLA and the NCP. 
  • Follow the assessment and response process for conducting removal and remedial actions. 
  • Understand the roles of OSCs and RPMs in hazardous waste cleanup actions. 
  • Describe the community involvement program and their part in cleanup actions. 
  • Highlight the site assessment process and other relevant topics to the Superfund program.

Superfund Essentials is recommended for EPA staff who are new to the Agency or to the Superfund program that require a basic understanding of the Superfund program. Superfund Essentials may also be valuable to personnel at other federal agencies, state and tribes supporting Superfund sites. 

Additional Information: This course does not meet the training requirements for EPA Superfund OSCs and RPMs. Regional Superfund programs may offer this awareness-level course to their stakeholders.
