Damaged land does not have to be abandoned land. Ecological revitalization can return damaged land to a state of health, vitality, and diversity. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Office of Superfund Remediation and Technology Innovation (OSRTI) develops resources, such as factsheets, performance measures, web sites, and technical papers on ecological restoration and revegetation of contaminated sites. This presentation will identify fact sheets, papers and training available on revitalization through OSRTI; and present ongoing work such as compilation of resources available - web-based, terrestrial carbon sequestration potential on amended sites, future internet seminars and case studies, and an OSWER document on converting disturbed sites to green space. Although OSRTI conducts in research in the interest of the Superfund program, the office believes that the resources we identify and create for ecological restoration can be useful to any site restoration project.
Presentation on the Hog Island and Newton Creek Ecological Restoration project on the restoration of natural communities and ecosystem processes for Newton Creek, the Hog Island Inlet,and Hog Island in Superior, Wisconsin. Historically, this area has been contaminated by industrial discharges and a former municipal combined sewer overflow. From 1997 to 2005, multiple partners remediated the contaminated sediments in Newton Creek and Hog Island Inlet. The stakeholder engagement and collaboration process created a Master Plan for building upon the success of these remediation efforts by proposing a guiding "Vision" as well as specific Goals, Objectives, and Actions that will help to restore terrestrial, riparian, wetlands, and aquatic habitats; increase ecosystem biodiversity and resilience; and reduce threats to the natural communities in the area. Ms. Green will present the ecological restoration process for this site along with information on a template that can be used for other projects, and resources available for natural landscaping (http://www.epa.gov/greenacres).
