Radiation Safety - Advanced For Environmental Professionals - Day 3
Offered by Environmental Response Training Program (ERTP)
ERT - OSRTI

This one day advanced level course is designed for On-Scene Coordinators, Remedial Project Managers, and other supervisory environmental professionals who may be involved in the investigation, assessment, and evaluation of radiologically contaminated sites. This course is intended to provide training on EPA guidance to experienced environmental professionals who may be responsible for regulatory compliance to protect site workers and the general public, and who may have to assess and evaluate site radiological conditions. The EPA's radiation response capabilities will also be discussed.

In addition, this course also gives guidance on the use of the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM). The manual provides detailed guidance for planning, implementing , and evaluating environmental and facility radiological surveys conducted to demonstrate compliance with dose-or risk-based regulations. The manual is a multi-agency consensus document that was developed collaboratively by four federal agencies having authority and control over radioactive materials. The MARSSIM guidance focuses on the demonstration of compliance during the final status survey.

Topics that are discussed include: guidance on regulatory requirements; guidance on the use of the MARSSIM; guidance on contamination control and simple decontamination; radiological posting requirements; and EPA's radiation response resources.

Instructional methods include: lectures and class discussions.

After completing the course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify regulations, consensus standards, and guidance that pertain to EPA personnel engaged in radiological fieldwork.
  • Discuss contamination control and methods for simple radioactive decontamination.
  • Identify information needed for the decision-making process that is required under the MARSSIM guidance at sites with radioactive contamination of surface soils and building surfaces.
  • Identify radiological area posting requirements.
  • Identify EPA's radiation response resources.
