Environmental Public Health Consequences of Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratories
Offered by The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Dept. of Emergency Medicine

This 1-day course will provide training for many aspects of methamphetamine manufacture and abuse. Acute and chronic health effects of methamphetamine use and its illicit manufacture from medical, social, and legal perspectives will be covered. This course will also address the special considerations for children’s exposure to methamphetamine, and how this issue is addressed in Omaha.

Course Objectives:

While “behind the counter” restrictions on access to some ingredients has had a tempering effect on methamphetamine lab proliferation, the continued availability of reagents and the hazardous wastes crated in the manufacture of this drug raise concerns about exposure to responders and cleanup/re-occupancy procedures. The objectives of this 1-day course are:
  • Describe the state of methamphetamine use and clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in the US.
  • Identify the clinical effects of methamphetamine and describe the management of acute and chronic toxicity.
  • Describe the chemical hazards of methamphetamine synthesis.
  • Identify the modalities available to treat victims of the clandestine methamphetamine lab exposure.
  • Identify special considerations for the evaluation of children found at the scene.
  • Identify personnel and environmental protection equipment to be used by first responders.
Please see the file attachments for the individual class offerings for detailed class descriptions and topics covered.
